Bovey City Hall
402 2nd St., Bovey
The village of Bovey, which sprung up with the development of the Western Mesabi Iron Range, started with a modest municipal facility. The village hall was a one-story concrete block structure that faced on an alley and barely housed a fire truck and a meeting room.
The outlook for a new building was dampened by the Great Depression, but soon the Public Works Administration came to the rescue. With a PWA grant and a local bond issue, a new hall was built in 1934. It was one of the first PWA projects completed in Minnesota.
The building blends Richardsonian Romanesque, Baroque Revival, and Renaissance Revival styles. It has a distinct Scandinavian flavor.
The architect was William Ingemann, who designed many Minnesota buildings, including the Sawyer Hotel in Stillwater (now in the Lowell Inn).
