The Methodist Episcopal Church

501 Cole Ave., Coleraine

When it was built in 1908-09, Coleraine Methodist housed not only a church but a Young Men’s Christian Assn., which included a gymnasium, showers, office, reading room, and parlor. It was meant, in part, to deter the town’s young people from visiting rowdy Bovey next door.

The building has been called “easily the largest and most impressive religious edifice on the Western Mesabi Range.” It has a massive foundation of coarsed fieldstone and is covered with a steep, multi-gabled roof. The shingle decoration makes it a major expression of the “shingle style” in northern Minnesota.

Its most notable features, however, are the rectangular and circular stained glass windows. The interior Akron plan provides for removable partitions that can be used to increase the sanctuary’s seating capacity.

A Place to Gather, Celebrate,
and Create Memories

Ravenstone Abbey is more than just a building; it’s a living, breathing destination. Today, it houses three distinct experiences under one roof:

Abbey Brew: A European-style coffee shop and bistro, where you can savor fine Italian espresso and specialty teas, along with delicious panini sandwiches and charcuterie boards. Our pergola-covered alfresco dining area adds a touch of continental charm to your visit.

The Stone Buttery: A medieval-themed pub offering a selection of fine wines, craft beers, and specialty cocktails. Here, you can unwind with friends in an atmosphere that transports you back to the days of old.
